Q. What is the difference between Artisan Lap and other fiber cement wall cladding?

A. Artisan Lap uses the patented DuraTech™ technology which provides a product with superior structural integrity. It is 5/8" thick, yet light enough for a single person to handle. This thickness allows Artisan Lap to show off distinctively deep shadow lines for premium aesthetics. The product is available in both smooth and texture* surfaces. Each lap board back is beveled to lie flat against the wall ensuring stability and smooth lines. Artisan Lap's unique tongue and groove ends, allow end joints to fit tightly together for precise fit and finish. Finally, Artisan Lap is low maintenance for lasting beauty. *Not available in all areas. Please check with your Artisan Sales Rep. or contact Customer Service at 888.800.7864 for more information.

Q. What is DuraTech technology?

A. DuraTech technology is a patented technology, which was developed by the James Hardie corporation R&D over the past 15 years. It is the combination of ingredients that allows Artisan Lap to be thicker, yet light enough for a single person to handle. DuraTech technology also provides a product that has superior structural integrity and unique improvements such as beveled backs, tongue and groove, nailability, and resistance to shrinking, swelling and cracking.

Q. What are the benefits of Tongue and groove?

A. Tongue and groove refers to the slotted butt ends that allow each Artisan lap board to fit tightly together for precise fit and finish. The ability to joint off stud is a nice benefit of the Tongue and groove. Also, no caulking is required.

A. Yes, the Artisan Limited Warranty guarantees the retail purchaser that Artisan Lap will be free from defects in material and workmanship for 30 years; and the Artisan Accent Trim free from defects in material and workmanship for 10 years from the date of purchase. The Artisan Lap warranty provides for full replacement of the product only. The Accent Trim warranty is prorated based on the price providing for full replacement of the product only. Both Artisan Lap and Artisan Accent Trim must be installed according to the Artisan Lap and Artisan Accent Trim Installation Requirements and all building codes adopted by federal, state or local governments or government agencies and applicable to the installation. Also, the replacement of both products is limited to the material affected only, and not for the cost of the labor or accessory materials.

Q. How does the Artisan Warranty compare with other wall cladding warranties?

A. The Artisan Lap Limited Warranty does not depreciate over its 30 year life. For full instructions, please refer to the Artisan Lap Installation Requirements sheet available at www.ArtisanLuxury.com.

Q. How can I control the dust?

A. Artisan recommends cutting outdoors only and positioning cutting station so that wind will carry dust away from user and others in the working area. James Hardie strongly recommends you use a circular saw equipped with a HardieBlade™ saw blade and HEPA vacuum extraction. Artisan does not recommend cutting Artisan Lap indoors. Never dry sweep – only use wet suppression or HEPA vacuum. NIOSH-approved respirators can be used in conjunction with above cutting practices to further reduce dust exposures. Additional exposure information is available at www.ArtisanLuxury.com to help you determine the most appropriate cutting method for your job requirements. If concern still exists about exposure levels, you should always consult a qualified industrial hygienist or contact Artisan Technical Services for further information at 888.800.7864. For full installation instructions, please refer to the Artisan Lap Installation Requirements instructions available at www.ArtisanLuxury.com.

Q. Is silica an issue that is specific to Artisan Lap or James Hardie® products?

A. No. Many products in the building industry contain silica in addition to fiber cement. Other silica-containing products can include bricks, concrete, tile, abrasives, grout, thin-set, glass, roofing tiles, gypsum wallboard, joint compound, stucco patch, mortar, and cementitious tile underlayments.

Q. Does the silica in Artisan Lap or James Hardie products pose a danger after the product is installed?

A. No. The silica in James Hardie products does not pose any danger during handling or to the homeowner once the product is installed. Respirable silica only poses a potential hazard from James Hardie products during certain activities that create dust (e.g., cutting, grinding, drilling, sanding, or otherwise abrading) and only if excessive amounts of respirable silica are present in the user's immediate breathing area. James Hardie products in their intact state do not emit dust.

Q. If I choose to wear a respirator when cutting Artisan Lap, what type of respirator is required to filter out the respirable silica particles most effectively?

A. Our best practices have been designed to help you reduce respirable silica dust exposures to below those levels which would normally require a respirator. However, if you decide to use a respirator to further reduce your exposure, a NIOSH-approved respirator with a rating of N95 or better should be selected. It is important to note that OSHA may require a formal respirator program be in place prior to respirator use in situations where respirators are required. An effective respirator program should include (but is not limited to) training, fit-testing, and medical monitoring. Please consult www.osha.gov to learn more about the requirements for properly implementing a respirator program.
